My cat always startles me, and I love watching him--does that count, or does it have to be a random animal?
It sounds like your cat is trying to tell you something.
My cat will suddenly run into the room where I am and meow at me. Or, she'll start following me around and meowing, until she gets her message across.
It's not always a cryptic message - sometimes she just wants her water dish filled.
